Behavioral Health Equity Advancement Lab (B-HEAL)
Advancing Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility in Behavioral Health Treatment & Supports
Our Mission
To build awareness, solutions, and skills to advance behavioral health equity. We define behavioral health equity as the right to access high-quality, culturally informed, and affordable behavioral health care services and supports for all. We work to advance behavioral health equity through research, training, and implementation support.
Our Vision
We envision a thriving world where all have equitable opportunities and resources, leading to optimal behavioral health and well-being and where no one is left behind. We strive to be a leading values-driven research lab advancing behavioral health equity.
Our Approach
We do this in a couple ways:
Engage those most affected by disparities, including minoritized, marginalized, and underserved individuals, families, and communities, in the identification, design, implementation, and evaluation of promising solutions
Address social determinants of health, such as social exclusion, unemployment, adverse childhood experiences, criminal legal system involvement, and food and housing insecurity.
Close the gap between research and practice to eliminate individual and institutional social conditions that give rise to inequities.
Engage and train students, practitioners, administrators, persons with lived experience in equity-informed behavioral health research and practice
Our Values
We are committed to authentic, honest, and transparent collaboration. We believe collaboration with partners in multiple sectors is essential in advancing equity.
Authentic Partnership
We are committed to going beyond the creation and discovery of new knowledge and will employ new learning to take action to reduce inequity.
Action
We are committed to the production of knowledge that advances equity through joining with the community, including persons with lived experience to identify, study, and co-develop sustainable strategies to address disparities.
Equity
We will form meaningful partnerships with the community to create opportunities for two-way knowledge transfer and co-learning that will lead to more effective, equitable, and enduring solutions to problems.
Mutuality
We acknowledge structural barriers to equitable outcomes and aim to address them through collective goals framed around the concept of justice.
Justice
Inclusion is an absolute priority. We welcome, respect, support, and value all people to fully participate and bring their full, authentic selves to the work of advancing behavioral health equity.
